Public measurement

What AI actually cites

When an AI assistant answers, it leans on websites it lists as sources. Nobody measures which ones, or how often. uwait measures it during real working sessions, without ever reading the questions asked. Here is the ranking.

Method

How these figures are produced

What is measured

Only the domains the assistant displays as sources for its answer. A domain, never the full page address in the ranking, never the content.

What is never read

Neither your question nor the AI's answer. The uwait extension detects that an answer is being generated and picks up the cited domains. The text stays on your machine.

Where it happens

On ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, while real people work. This is not a bot querying models with hand-picked questions: it is real usage, with its biases.

One citation per site per person

The same domain cited several times to the same person on the same day counts once. Without that rule, re-asking the same question would be enough to inflate a ranking.

What is set aside

A share of each displayed ad's revenue is set aside for the sources cited in the matching answer. Those amounts are not published: at our current scale they mean nothing, and the subject of this page is the measurement of citations.

What is excluded from the count

Links the user pasted into their own question: they render like any other link, but counting them would measure the user rather than the AI. The assistant's own domain is dropped, and uwait.co is removed from the public ranking.

Why some domains are missing

A domain cited by one person is not a statistic

This data comes from real people's AI sessions. A domain cited by a single user says nothing about what AI cites: it says what that person was doing. Publishing a company's internal tool or a niche site would expose their activity.

So a domain only appears here, in the ranking and in the search alike, once it reaches 5 distinct users. The threshold is about people, not citation counts: a thousand citations from one person is still personal data. As of now, 6838 measured domains are withheld for this reason.

Limits

What this ranking says, and what it does not

It says what AI assistants cited to a set of people while they worked. It does not say what AI cites in general: our audience skews technical and European, which mechanically pushes development sites and French-language sources up. A broader panel would give a different ranking.

We would rather publish a sample and state its size than a round number with no method. The raw data is linked above, publication threshold included: the calculation can be redone.

Questions

What people ask us

Which sites do AI assistants cite most?

In our measurements, community platforms and code repositories lead clearly: github.com, youtube.com, reddit.com, stackoverflow.com and wikipedia.org. News media appear far behind, with a citation volume that is not remotely comparable.

Do you pay the sites that get cited?

A share of ad revenue is set aside for cited sources, but there is no payout mechanism for publishers yet, and current amounts are nowhere near what a bank transfer would cost. We would rather publish nothing than wave figures that bind no one. This ranking measures citations, not money.

My site does not appear, why?

Either it was not cited in the answers our users saw, or it was cited by too few people to publish without exposing their activity. We do not say which reason applies, because saying so would itself be information about those people.

Do you read my conversations with the AI?

No. Neither questions nor answers leave your machine. The extension only picks up the domains the assistant itself displays as sources, and the fact that an answer is being generated.

How is a citation counted?

A citation is a domain displayed by the assistant as a source for its answer, seen by one person. The same domain cited several times to the same person on the same day counts once: without that rule, re-asking the same question would be enough to inflate a ranking.

Are these figures representative of all AI usage?

No. This is a sample from uwait users' sessions on ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini. The audience skews technical and European, which mechanically pushes development sites and French-language sources up the ranking.

Want to make the counter grow?

Every ad shown during a wait sets aside a share for the sources cited. The more users and advertisers there are, the less symbolic the number.
